Samarkand Restaurant and Cafe Recommendations

Samarkand has always been one of the cities that impressed me with its historic streets and enchanting atmosphere. When I came here, I embarked on a full culinary journey, not only through the magnificent structures but also with traditional Uzbek dishes. If you ever find yourself in Samarkand, I’ve listed the dishes you must try and the best places to visit! 😋

I’d also like to mention that at many places, you might pay an additional service charge ranging from 10% to 15% based on the fees.

Plov prices generally range from 40,000 Som = 110₺, and if you want to try Mantı, each one costs around 8,000 Som = 22₺.

Teas are served directly in cups, and prices start from 10,000 Som = 27₺, going up to 30,000 Som = 82₺.

What to Eat in Samarkand? 🍽️

1. Uzbek Pilaf (Plov)

We wouldn’t be exaggerating if we called this the homeland of pilaf! 🥘 Uzbek pilaf is made with the perfect combination of rice, lamb, carrots, and onions. The difference in Samarkand-style pilaf is that it is not stirred while cooking. This way, every bite you take offers a unique taste. My favorite is definitely the one with plenty of meat! 😍

2. Mantı

It resembles our mantı, but the portions here are much larger! The steamed Samarkand mantı, with its generous filling and yogurt poured on top, is truly legendary. The pleasure of having it hot in the winter is something else. 🥟

3. Shashlik (Kebab)

You’ll often come across shashlik being grilled over open flame on the streets. 🔥 This delicious treat, made by skewering well-marinated lamb or beef and grilling it, might tempt you, especially during evening strolls. You might find yourself ordering a second portion, saying, “I can’t believe I’m still hungry.” 😂

4. Samsa

Samsa is a crispy pastry baked in a tandoor. 🥐 Usually filled with minced meat and spices, but in some places, you can also find versions with potatoes or pumpkin. There’s nothing like a warm samsa and tea for breakfast! 🍵
